The Versatile Fairy Dust

Hello Crafty Folks,

This is Karthikha here and I'm so glad to be a guest designer at Itsy Bitsy!

I received a set of 20 colors of Little Birdie Fairy Dust as contest win and at that time my hands were tied with office work. After an impatient wait, once I got to try them, I just couldn't stop creating!

So here are my creations with the Fairy Dust.

Creation 1 & 2 - Butterfly Cards:

I love butterflies and that was the first one I wanted to create. I had imagined a shiny shimmery butterfly in my mind and that is what I exactly got as the finished product!

Now let's see how I made it....
I took a white cardstock and stuck double sided tape allover. Removed the release paper and poured the Peacock and Magenta Fairy Dust randomly. Tapped off the excess Fairy Dust each time onto a piece of paper so that they could be used again or be put back into the bottle. Once I was satisfied with the mix of blue and pink, I ran it through my die cutting machine using the largest butterfly from Sizzix Thinlits Winged Beauties.

Now here is the trick of making 2 cards out of one. Take another cardstock and stick double sided tape allover. Remove the release paper and place the butterfly as a whole onto it. Slowly remove the main butterfly, leaving the negative parts and pressing them firmly. You now have one beautiful butterfly diecut and a panel with the blue and pink negatives.

For the first card, I used black cardstock and some matching blue and pink background panel through the cut design. Added a few pink sequins and blue stars from the Sprinkles pack. The sentiment is stamped using Versamark and heat embossed in clear embossing powder.

Check out the shine on the glitter!

For the second card, I filled the rest of the open panel space with Sunrise Gold Fairy Dust. Took another cardstock, die cut using scallop stitched rectangles and fill it with Sunrise Gold Fairy Dust. Mounted the panel onto this golden frame and attached to the main black base cardstock.

Creation 3 - Shaker ATC:

Next I wanted to create a shaker card with mixed shaker elements. Took the cardstock, filled it with double side tape and diecut the frames as required. Removed the release paper and filled it with Teal Fairy Dust. Created another similar frame for the backside too. Attached acetate on the inner side and glued them. Using foam tape, attached the 2 frames, after filling it with all the shaker elements of my choice. Here I've used a lot of blue shaded sequins, pearls, a blue butterfly, glitter dust, and even a double sided sentiment that says "Dream Big" and "Make a Wish". These sentiments are from the Jumbo Wishes stamp set.

Creation 4 - Daisy Birthday Card

For this card, I tried using the stencil technique. I took a white cardstock and stuck double sided tape allover. I placed a stencil of cluster daisies and filled with Hot Pink Fairy Dust. It was awesome to look at those shiny gorgeous flowers, but when I took the stencil out, I figured out I hadn't placed it firm enough and there was glitter in other areas too apart from the open areas. Mistakes can become a different art sometimes! So I filled the entire base with glitter. placed the stencil again and applied glitter to make the flowers darker. There you go with a pink self design!

I diecut a scallop rectangle from the stenciled panel and assembled onto the card base at an angle, trimmed the rest of the panel.

Creation 5 - Daisy Birthday Card 2

Just because you went wrong the first time, you won't stop right! Here is my second try on the stencil technique. This time I made sure my stencil is firmly placed and no gaps between the stencil and the cardstock. I filled it with a different shade of pink - Sheer Rose Fairy Dust. Once I removed the stencil, I got a lovely design and I decided to fill the open areas in silver using the Silver Fairy Dust. Die cut a scallop rectangle and assembled as a CAS card.

Creation 6 - Altered Mini Medicine Bottle

Glitter can find its place anywhere and not just card making! I had this very small medicine bottle and didn't have the heart to throw it away. Fairy Dust struck me and here I've altered the bottle.  This idea came when I was thinking what to do with the left over glitter that fell down while making the cards! I hated to waste them, so mixed all of the blue, pink shades and used it here :)

I applied mod podge and filled with the mixed glitter while the glue was still wet. Tapped off the excess and allowed it to dry overnight. Once dry, checked for empty spots and repeated the process.

Tip: To prevent the glitter from falling and sticking to your hands, coat with 1 or 2 layers of mod podge leaving sufficient drying time in between.

I then embellished it using a golden ribbon and a couple of gem stickers. Did you notice the golden border at the base of the bottle? It is nothing but the scalloped scrap from the butterfly card :)

Able to see the mix of colours in the glitter? That's my scrap dust!!

To understand how tiny it is, look at what I've kept inside - Toothpicks! :)

Here is a video of all the cards :)

Hope you enjoyed my creations! Do try your hands on these gorgeous glitters and add an oomph to your work! Have a nice day!

Crafter in The Spotlight 56 - Itsy Bitsy

Hello arty-crafty folks,

It’s Thursday and as usual I’m back to share another crafter’s story with you. This week the talented Crafter to be in the ‘Spotlight’ is Shefali Agrawal, who originally belongs to Rajasthan but now is a resident of Bangalore.
Shefali is a true crafter at heart as she not only loves crafting but also enjoys shopping for craft supplies. What was earlier summer holiday fervor, turned recently into serious crafting passion for Shefali. She adores the art of decoupage and is also keen to try out different card making styles.

How did Shefali get into crafting, what inspires her, what are her tips for fellow crafters, her favourite quote, how would she contribute to the crafting world if she had magical powers? Read answers to all these questions, discover more about her interesting journey and catch a glimpse of a step by step project by Shefali in this interview. Don't forget to leave your comments for her.

Rashmi Closepet, MD, Itsy Bitsy:   Tell us a bit about yourself & your background?
Shefali Agrawal:  Hi, I am Shefali. I am from Beawar, Rajasthan, but I am staying in Bangalore for last 3 years. I am a software engineer by profession and a crafter at heart! I also love reading, travelling and shopping, especially for craft supplies.

RC: How did you get into crafting?
SA: I used to do a lot of art and craft during school summer holidays- like painting, ceramic clay work, up-cycling stuff etc. I got into serious crafting a year and a half back when I attended a stained glass mosaic workshop in Bangalore. That inspired me to try out other forms of crafting as well.

RC: What is your favourite type of craft?
SA:  I love decoupage. I am also trying my hands at card making.

RC: What are your favourite products at Itsy Bitsy?
SA: All the lovely stamp sets and the chalk paints.

RC:   If you had magical powers, how would you contribute to the Crafting world?
SA:  I would definitely create infinite storage space for crafters. I am always looking for space to store new supplies and searching for the ones I know I have kept somewhere J So, I guess, creating huge storage space for crafters would make them utterly happy!!

RC:  Your prized possession in your craft stash from Itsy Bitsy?
SA:  Chalk Paints and Shaker elements.

RC:  How would you describe your style of crafting?
SA:  Whimsical. I like to try out whatever catches my fancy at that time and I am always looking for new things to learn.

RC: How do you organize your time for crafting?
SA: During the weekdays, it’s mostly in the evenings after work. Even I don’t have time to create something, I love to sit and watch videos of my favorite crafters on YouTube. On weekends I spend most of my time crafting J

RC: Tips for people who want to craft
SA: I would suggest that you don’t wait for something to strike your fancy. Start small if you will!! Make time for it as you can and keep trying.

RC: Your all -time favourite quote?
SA: “One day, or day one. You decide!”

Here is a gorgeous project by  Shefali  & step by step procedure:

Shaker Grid card using Happy Bird-day clear stamps set

Step 1: Take a white cardstock and draw a grid on it.

Step 2: Use a pair of scissors or a craft knife to cut out the inner squares to get a grid frame like this. I created two grid frames like this. In case you have a grid die, you can use that to combine step 1 & 2.

Step 3: Take the Clear Stamps - Happy Bird-Day stamp set from Itsy Bitsy and stamp 2-3 images of all the birds on a white card stock. Then color the images and cut them out. Also stamp and cut the happy bird-day sentiment from the stamp set.

Step 4: Cut out a background for the card. I used the green paper from chevron in Aquarelle cardstock and cut it slightly larger than the grid.

Step 5: Now its time to assemble the shaker card. I stuck one of the grids on the green base, and added double sided tape on it. Then I used some scrapbooking glue and used it to stick some bigger shaker elements to the base of the card.

Step 6: Next I added shaker elements from Shaker Sprinkles in red, green and silver and sealed them off using a piece of acrylic sheet slightly smaller than the grid window size.

Step 7: I used the other grid cutout to finalize the placement of the little birds on the card.

Step 8: I used some double sided tacky tape to stick this window on top of the acrylic sheet and then used foam dots to stick the little birds on top of that. Foam dots provide a nice raised look to the cut outs and I love the effect. At the last minute I also remembered to make space for the sentiment banner and added that as well.

Hello arty-crafty folks,

It’s Thursday and time for me to introduce you to a talented crafter and her amazing craft skills. This week’s chosen one is S.Radhika from Hyderabad, who loves learning new techniques and trying new craft styles.

Radhika has enjoyed crafting from very childhood. She loves making cards but is highly motivated to try her hands on altered art, up-cycling projects and much more.

How did Radhika get into crafting, what inspires her, what are her tips for fellow crafters, her favourite quote, how would she contribute to the crafting world if she had magical powers? Read answers to all these questions, discover more about her interesting journey and catch a glimpse of a step by step project by Radhika in this interview. Don't forget to leave your comments for her.

Rashmi Closepet, MD, Itsy Bitsy:  Tell us a bit about yourself & your background?
Radhika: Hello everyone! Firstly it's such a great honour to feature in 'Crafters in the Spotlight'. Thank you so much Rashmi, Anitha and whole Itsy Bitsy team for this opportunity. I Am S. Radhika from Hyderabad, Telangana. I live with my family and they are my biggest support in everything I do :) I have completed my Masters (M.Sc) in Microbiology. I love to craft and learn new things. If I see any new craft or technique I will try those and I like to experiment with the supplies I have 😄

RC: How did you get into crafting?
Radhika: I love crafting from childhood. I like to make handmade cards, altered things up-cycle and recycle, painting, jewellery making, quilling, rangoli, mixed media and recently started doodling and sketching. Previously I used to make paper crafts, cards with chart paper to gift friends, painted and altered things too… so after completing my studies I started my blog to give full time to crafts I knew.  After joining the social media, I came across a lot of new things and saw a different angle of crafting and craft supplies which I had never known before. I learned so many things and have grown day by day in crafting. Still learning new stuff!! I have completed 4 year of blogging and I am loving it.

RC: What is your favourite type of craft?
Radhika: As I can’t stick to one craft, I like to try all crafts. All are my favourite but my most favourite craft is card making. I want to try all styles of card making starting from simple CAS cards to a fancy fold layered cards. Am in love with interactive cards these days and willing to experiment with them 😃

RC:  What are your favourite products at Itsy Bitsy?
Radhika:  I have so many favourite products at Itsy Bitsy…. first comes the chalk paints, stamps, chipboards, colour splash, flowers, silicon glue, charms, beads, stickers and embellishments, blank cards with envelopes and many more it's a big list.

RC:  If you had magical powers, how would you contribute to the Crafting world?
Radhika: If I had magical powers I would open a magical door from my room and all crafters room to every craft store possible.  That would help us grab whatever we want within seconds to complete projects. All crafter would then have easy access to all supplies they want.
I always forget where I keep some supplies and they always go missing and with one swing of my magical wand they should appear before me ;p

RC:   Your prized possession in your craft stash from Itsy Bitsy?
Radhika: Chalk paints, stamps and blank cards and envelopes, flowers.... but if I had to choose just one… I would choose chalk paints because they are super cool, I love to use them!!

RC:     How would you describe your style of crafting?
Radhika: I love to try all styles I don't have any particular style. Whatever style looks appealing to me I try that style.

RC:    How do you organize your time for crafting?
Radhika: I usually don't organize time to craft. Whenever I feel like… I start crafting. I forget time, when crafting and if I start anything…. I will complete it at any cost.

RC: Tips for people who want to craft
Radhika: Don't stop yourself because you don't have enough supplies…. make best and try different approaches to use supplies that you have :)

RC:   Your all -time favourite quote?
Radhika: "Do more of what makes you HAPPY "
Crafting makes me happy and whenever I feel low I craft and be happy😊

Here is a gorgeous project by Radhika & step by step procedure:

First grab your canvas and supplies needed. I used chalk paints Lemon chiffon and Drift wood, flowers, sequence, script stencil, craft sticks, chipboard frame and any photograph.

Painted the canvas with Lemon Chiffon and then added script stencil  with drift wood chalk paint below and top left of canvas

Sprinkled some drift wood paint on to the canvas...then it' was time to color the frame and glue the photograph to the frame. Also added the brick shapes for texture with craft stick pieces on the canvas.

Then coloured the craft stick pieces and glued the frame and positioned all the flowers. Finally glued them when I was happy with the layout..

Added some yellow tint gold sequence above and below the frame and finally stamped the dream-catcher stamp to fill in the space and added the gold twine to finish my canvas.
